I've read that a plastic piece breaks under there and gives the symptoms
you describe. But I'm only personally familiar with rod shifters, like
on my 92. I don't know if your problem could be similar to this or
not...

I once had the pot metal L bracket at the bottom of the shift mechanism
break. I was cruising up to a stop light, pulled it out of 3rd and then
the shifter was just loose and sloppy, no shift gate feelings anywhere.
I could take it from where 1st should have been and travel at a -45
degree angle straight down to where reverse should have been. I coasted
into the corner gas station, got out and assessed the problem. I could
put it in gear via moving the shift rod by hand. I figured I had only
two blocks of city travel with open highway in between, and all right
turns. So I shoved it back in 3rd, rode the clutch out to get started
and took my time getting home in the slow lane. Once home I dropped the
black plastic box down and confirmed what I thought had happened. An
exhaust shop welded it up stronger than stock for like $5.

Hi, I have a 91 with 44k on engine. Last night I warmed the car and
went
to shift into reverse, but the car would not move.
I tried first gear, same problem and I notice that the shifter feels
loose to the point of flopping over. The shifter cable was
Replaced a year ago with the transmission, but this fall while new
motor
mounts were installed the shop ( not the place
That changed the transmission a year ago ) notice the shifter bracket
was bent and a plastic piece was missing from the new shifter cable.
My
question is what can cause my problem.not going into gear. The clutch
seems to be trying to engage
When I try to shift into first the odometer increases and the car
tries
to move/ stall , but that is the most it will do. I live
