Welcome to the list!! Don't apologize for the Fiero GT's!! They are cool
cars, and one of the few GM's I would consider owning. There are a few list
members that have Fieros also.
Now, what are your reasons for wanting a SHO? What are the reasons you want
one? Because it is fast? A four door? If these are your main criteria,
also look at a Maxima SE with Nissan's DOHC V6. The Maxima has a little
smaller back seat leg room, but everything else is SHO-like. Now, if you
drive both of them (Max SE and SHO), the SHO will "feel" more visceral. The
SHO can be a reliable car, but it is maintenance intensive, and unless you
can do your own maintenance, it will be a very expensive car to own. OTOH,
SHO's are a non-interference engine, so if the timing belt breaks, the only
damage is the tow bill and a new timing belt, but on the Max, the engine is
an interference design, so you will be replacing/rebuilding the engine at
great cost (this is the only drawback of the Maxima).
I have driven both, and when I bought my SHO, a Max SE was the only other
consideration. My observations... The Max has a MUCH better chassis than
the SHO, remember, the SHO is a Taurus with an awesome engine. The Taurus
chassis isn't like a wet noodle, but it doesn't feel like it is all one
piece. Aside from the SHO engine, there is nothing really spectacular about
the SHO. All that being said... I bought a SHO. It wasn't the most
logical choice, but more of a passionate choice. The Yamaha designed and
built V6 is pure magic. Popping the hood and seeing the intake is like
seeing a work of art, no plastic covers here to hide anything. Dropping the
hammer and listening and feeling the SHO engine come to life is the best
thing this side of a Ferrari/Porsche/insert your favorite exotic here. The
SHO is definitely the best sports sedan to come out of Detroit, ever.
Overall, though, the Maxima SE is a better car. I drove the Max first, and
was impressed, but the SHO engine intoxicated me.
As was said before, and in other posts, the SHO can be a maintenance
headache. Unless the seller can provide documentation about recent 60k
service, plan on spending at least a weekend doing this yourself or paying
big $$$ to have someone do it. The transmissions are just adequate, and
care is needed with them. If you are looking for soemthing that will roast
the tires again and again without major outlays of cash for a new
transmission, look elsewhere, or spend roughly $1200 on a Quaiffe LSD and
replace the weak open diff.
If you are looking for a road test article, stop by my site:
http://www.v6sho.com/ I have an article from '89 C/D about the SHO there.
I have several more that I haven't put up yet (just being lazy).
All the negatives about the car, though, are far outweighed by the
positives. Getting behind the wheel of a sorted out SHO is pure extasy. If
you drive one, you WILL want to own one. It will be a never ending quest to
get one.

Subject: [Shotimes] new to mailing list
> Hello all I'd just like to introduce myself. I as of yet do not own a
sho but am collecting as much information on the subject as possible. I
don't know much about the show and any info that you may pass along will be
helpful to my search for "the next love" in my life. I have owned three
fiero's in the past but am now looking for something with four doors that
has as much get up and go as my Fiero GT (before all of you get up in arms
about a fiero gt being as quick as a sho iI had done mods to mine). What I
would most like is links to any articles such as road tests and the like,
all I can seem to find is on for the 96 and personally I'm a fan of the 2nd
gen. cars. Thanks for the time and hope to be posting questions about my own
SHO in the future.
