I don't think the Maxima got a chain until '95.  The early Gen 2 (84-88)
with the VG30E (SOHC V6) engine had a belt.  The Gen 3 (89-94) with the
VG30E engine had a belt.  The Gen 3 utilised 2 different VG30DE (DOHC V6)
engines (from 91-94), 91-92 was totally different than the 93-94 engine.
The latter being more similar to the VG30DE as found in the 90-96 300ZX.
One of the big features of the Gen 4 Maxima (95-99?) was the use of a timing
chain.
