Your VIN should be in at least two places:
1) in the dash on the driver's side, visible through the windshield,
and
2) on the manufacturing sticker on the inside of the driver's door, visible
when the door is opened.
Check both and verify that they match each other, then try looking it up on
Carfax. Post your VIN here, we can tell if it is of a valid format.
OTOH, there is a difference if the your dealer can find no record of your
car's VIN, but you didn't say that.
Dealers look up VINs to check for outstanding recalls and TSBs and to see if
there is a vehicle service history. This is called the OASIS reporting
system by Ford.
