Another method is to replace the oil level sending unit with a temp sender
unit.  The oil level idiot light always seemed rather silly to me.  I
removed the guts of the level sender and plugged the fitting.  Then drilled
& tapped it for the temp sender.

Someone was looking for a way to connect their oil temp gauge a while ago.
Don't know if they meant electric or mechanical.  Here is a sender/drain
plug
for an electric gauge.
