STOP DRIVING THE CAR TILL YOU REPLACE THE VSS.
That is the exact thing that was happening to my 95 SE (same AX4S tranny),
and it destroyed the tranny. Now the tranny clunks hard between gears and
has some weird metal clanking noises at idel or in neutral. It's a pain in
the ass to get to on a vulcan, so I think it would be just as much so on an
ATX SHO. It's held in by 1 10mm bolt, and if your good at working by feel
you should be able to get to it from the top. You may need to remove the
y-pipe to make axx to it easier.

Subject: [Shotimes] 94 ATX Vehicle Speed Sensor
I searched through the SHOtimes site but didn't find a walkthrough on what
I'll need to know to change the VSS on Tara's 94 ATX. Any help is greatly
appreciated. Car recently began having an erratic speedo, and in the past
two days seems to have forgotted how and when to shift while slowing down
until it gets to the point that it clunks back down into first gear right
before stopping. IIRC, these are all signs of the VSS giving up the ghost
and it is showing a code for Vehicle Speed Sensor as well. Any other
thoughts? I just need this tranny to make it until I get the 98 back on the
road. Really should get rid of the ATXs :o) Thanks folks!
