[Shotimes] Instruction On Reinforcing Motor Mounts

Frank;
Not hard really. The front mount is the one that takes all the abuse on
power. On the front mount, there is a "safety catch" rod going thru the
mount. (Keeps the manifold from putting dents in the hood). Problem is
the original rod has 1 inch of movement before it bottoms out, and the
rubber tears loose from the mount first. Its maybe 1/4 inch dia. Grind
off the end, bang it out, drill out the hole, and replace it with a 6
in (?) long 1/2 in dia bolt. Then add washers, brass sleeves, plumbing
pipe, extra nuts, whatever you can find in the hardware store to
increase the diameter of this bolt to near 1 inch. Make sure you leave
some room between this bolt with its spacers, and the bottom part of the
mount. 1/8 - 1/4 in should be plenty. You do not want it completely
solid or you will get nasty buzzing & vibration. BTDT. It will bottom
out when you hit the throttle. Back mount is similar, but would only
bottom out on hard downshifts. And why bother with the trans one? It
just holds things up.
Maybe $5 in hardware.
I've heard of others removing the little vibration shock absorbers on
each side of the engine, or replacing them with clevis bolts. I
wouldn't recommend either, their mounting brackets are not that strong.
Just leave them alone, unless you like slop, clunks or vibration.
I suspect your current mount is torn. That would cause engine
oscillation and break tires loose on the power. You could try patching
up the old one as mentioned above. But if it is ripped completely, I'd
buy a new one. It is too much work to get it out to wind up being not
happy with it and doing it a second time.
