Who's 58 is that? Tell me more about it please...

I think 58 is one of the most interesting years for cars in
history. There were annual model changes, of course during
that decade, but 1958 was unusual because dual headlights
became virtually universal that year, and it was a crossover
year between the gobs of chrome bits early/mid 50's and it
was also the beginning of the end for fins, the 59 Caddy and
Chevy notwithstanding.

The 58 model of almost every manufacturer, but especially GM
were unique in the decade.

The 58 Olds/Buick/Pontiac and Chevy looked almost NOTHING
like the 57 and 59 versions of those cars. There was better
family resemblence between the 57/58/59 Caddy's, but still
it was a unique year.

Chrome started it's decline to more subtle (relatively
speaking!) enhancement in 1959 so I consider 1958 the high
water mark of chrome(or low depending on your viewpoint).

Heck even the 58 Corvette that was very similar in body
style to the years on either side, had unique hood and truck
styles and added chrome that make it easy to spot from a
long ways away.

My father bought a 1958 Super Chief Pontiac (last year for
that name) in 1959.

1958 was a horrible year for sales, but that allowed my dad
to buy this left over grey with green interior 58 four-door
sedan at a bargain price. That car had the standard 370 CI
engine. This car beat many a higher performance model at
the drags, including tri-power Olds and chevy models.
