[Shotimes] Unstable Sable

My roomate has a 91 Sable with 3.8 (I think).
It has a problem his mechanic can't figure out.
>From start-up to 10 miles it runs great.
After 10+ miles it cuts out on the road. 
He describes it as an "instantly dead" no power
situation. In other words, it does not sputter and
cough like a starving for fuel situation.
Right now its dead on the road and I'll drive him
out to the car in the morning. It will start up
immediately like nothing ever happened, and will
get him home because it won't get hot enough to die
out. Anyone out there have any ideas on this? Thanks.
