[Shotimes] painting?

Hi,

^ professional auto body technician with some advice.
Rust will not be defeated if you just cover it up with spray paint. you
must strip all areas with 35-40 grit on a high speed sander. 3M makes roloc
disks in 2 inch diameter which will work best for what you are doing. once
you get the areas stripped down so that no rust pits or dark gray material
is evident, you must treat the metal with self etching primer, epoxy primer,
or a U-pol primer(such as PPG NCP-270)

if you use a self etching primer, you must then apply the epoxy primer
overtop and then your build primer to get it back to shape (removing sanding
and grinding scratches). You can use a good epoxy primer in place of the
self etching primer. Such primers as MAtrix MP-480 are lead based epoxy
primers that will etch nicely. You have to mix the primer, and then let it
sit in the cup for a 1/2 hour induction period. You can cover it with K-36
PPG build primer, and then start wetsanding. it's easiest to start with 400
grit, and then reguidecoat it, and go to 600 grit, and use a 3M red very
fine scotchbrite pad for hard to reach corners and things. then you must
apply a sealer and then you can paint it. for sealing, you can use the
MP-480, mixed 2:1:2 sealer:activator:DT reducer. That is probably the
easiest.

for final paint, the exact match for those parts is SEM Trim Black. You can
buy it by the quart or in spray cans. it doesn't need to be reduced or
activated. it burns completely flat just like OEM.

Hope this helps.

John

Some of the flat black painted areas of my car are starting to rust or
show metal as the paint has 'worn' away. Specifically, the mirrors and
the side panels between the windows on the doors.

Anyone have any ideas on how to repaint those and with what?
