I'd also like to add something to John's explanation as well. With rack & pinion tie rods, you
usually have threads inbetween the two. In a traditional gearbox tie rod setup, the tie rods
themselves are threaded (not all, but some) w/ a sleeve that you spin to make your adjustments.
