Kirk;
To test the disc condition you must adjust it to grab in the middle. If
it slips then, it is probably a worn out disc. If it is grabbing at the
top, it is not a good test, as the pressure plate will always be under
cable tension. Your adjuster may have been broken during a clutch job.
I devised the following "pedal adjuster test" to sort thru clutch issues
on my car.
My lever arm is 100mm from the clutch cable boss on the bellhousing at
rest, with a brand new clutch, and moves 30 mm when pedal pushed.
If it is much closer, the disc or flywheel is probably too thin, or the
adjuster has pre-loaded the cable too tight.
To test adjuster mechanism:
Put 7 in block of wood under clutch pedal. to release adjuster.
Pull cable thru clutch lever with bare fingers til 1/2 in of slack in cable.
Have someone else Remove wood block.
Measure lever arm position with it touching release bearing with finger
pressure.
Pull up on clutch pedal, you should heard several loud clicks.
Lever arm should be in same position, not pre-loaded. But all cable
slack should be gone. If so, adjuster is O.K.
It took about 6-8 clicks to move my cable 1/4-1/2 in.
The clutch should now grab in the middle.
(The only way I could get my clutch to grab near the top was to force an
extra 6-8 clicks into the adjuster, which moved the lever arm 20 mm from
its at-rest position)
The trans/clutch on my car is currently apart for repair, so if I can
help you out let me know.
