My dad's shop used some stuff called "Freeze 12".  It is a fairly direct 
replacement for R12, so you don't have to replace any components.  It does 
not cool as well as R12 but will let you get by, and I'm in Dallas where it 
does get HOT sometimes.

We've discussed this particular product on the list in the past.  It has its

good points and bad points, but IMO is a reasonable alternative to spending 
big bucks on a car with low market value.

I think there is at least one other R12 replacement but I don't have any 
information on it.
