Well, if you define it very narrowly for US automakers producing MTX cars
alone......maybe.
BW came out with the Bavaria back in '72, which was my first non-musclecar
"desire". BMW and MB have been producing them through the '7s and '80s
before the SHO. GM had produced the Pontiac STE, then various versions of
the Grand Prix throughout the '80s.

It was one of the first "Performance Sports Sedans" in its generation.
