A strong locating pin (holding the pinion shaft) only solves the issue of
the the locating pin sheering, and keeping the pinion shaft in the diff
housing (and case!). The pinion shafts THEMSELVES can/will gall on the
spider gears, and break themselves (I remember seeing sergio's at the 99
convention, looked like somebody had put it on a lathe and milled out .100"
off the center!) where it broke. Welding a band around the diff to keep the
pinion shafts will probably at the least just keep the case intact! But if
the diff is eating itself, all those pieces get throw around in the trans
and start breaking gear teeth, chewing bearings, etc. But your case will be
good!

But, some strong roll pins (or some variation) and GOOD fresh fluid in the
trans (like synthetic) should help prevent the pinion shafts from galling on
the spider gears, assuming both are already in good shape and not wearing.
So it should handle some abuse more than stock.

The quaife is a lot of $$ but I've never heard anybody who finally bit the
bullet and got one say it wasn't worth it. The draw of it to me is the
performance, with the reliability/warranty an added bonus. Only cost about
$1350 or so if you are a DIY'er, if you buy it and the needed install
components (bearings, etc). Lots of labor though! Race tires and a quaife
even on a stock SHO is a hoot on a race track.
