In the passenger-ferry company that I work for, one of our engineers a few
days ago started spouting off about some magnet-based fuel saver, with a
tin piece that the fuel travels through as a "catalyst". Apparently the
company selling that product was guaranteeing a minimum 10% reduction in
fuel use, and was talking about fuel savings of up to 30%. Of course, the
company claimed to have test data from a reputable test lab proving their
point, but wouldn't give our corporation (second-largest ferry corporation
in the world, in passenger-miles per year) one unit to use as a test unit.
I think they already knew what we'd find, but they wanted to have several
grand of our cash in their pockets...

And once your cash is in their pockets, it's more difficult to get it out
than when it was still in your hands... ...And given that some of our
marine engines are pushing over 50% thermal efficiency as it is (not much
further to go until we hit Carnot efficiency-- the best the engine could
possibly do without some serious voodoo action), I don't think those
devices have a 10% margin that they can realistically play with.

My boss is convinced about the Tornado device-- claims it saves him 10%.
Then again, he drives with a very light foot... He also believes in those
cell phone antenna-boosters (those things that have some metal-flake paint
on a plastic decal which you put in your phone).

*shrug*. Until somebody shows me the full test data, or offers to sponsor
a full test with their own money, silly claims go in one ear and out the
other.
