I got a year out of my old GL when I noticed only 2 days after the boot
was compromised.  (I think the brake shop did it after I told them to
shove their estimate up their collective you-know-whats and put it back
together so I can come and get it and do it myself, as it was a nice, 
clean,
straight cut.  but what do I know)  I got a local shop to just put a boot
on it if I relinquished the guarantee on their work.  About a year later
it started to make noise and I got the halfshaft replaced.
YMMV though.  There is still alot of debris and dust that is kicked up
even from a dry non-dirt road.  It doesn't take much to ruin a CV joint.
I'd at least get a new boot on it as soon as you can.
