Plan on replacing the entire axle. You get a warrantee that way. So just
keep driving. You will start to hear noise and get increasing vibration as
the joint deteriorates before finally coming apart. But I would not worry
about 300 miles. Hand pack grease in the split boot as a backup if you are
worried. Before I started changing the entire axle assemblies I had a 1988
Sable that I ran for 6 months with a torn boot. But I packed grease in the
boot 2 or 3 times a week. Talk about a big damn mess! The grease really gets
throw around!!
Bad sign that no grease has been slung around. It should sling grease with
even a small hole in the boot. If it's split then you should see a good bit
of grease slung around? Is there any grease at all inside? Running dry it
won't last long.
