I've used duct tape(cloth type) to do exactly what you want to do.  Its not good for a long time, even less time if it rains, but it will cut down on the grease escaping till you can fix it right.

Clean the boot really well with something like simple green, and then brake cleaner.  Let it dry well, then stick on the duct tape.
