Sorry I didn't answer yesterday...we're moving into and moving out of houses at the
same time, and that takes ALL the time there is in a day, especially when the moving
out part includes a house that has been lived in for over 25 years.  

You have to remove the strut from the car, as if you were going to change it.  In
fact, you have to remove the spring (or at least depressurize it), as the strut
mount holds the spring in place.  It can still be done in about an hour, as long as
it is a California car (no rust), but there is no short cut.  You can install
washers to act as spacers from the top, to simulate the shim that raises the car
above the bearing that scrubs and makes noises, but to replace the whole strut
mount, you have to pull the whole thing.  There isn't room to get the old one out
and the new one in, much less being able to do that without releasing the spring.
