Are the bumper brackets on a gen 1 the same as a gen 2?

True.  But slightly heavier, and a cage in both would even up any
differences probably.  The biggest advantage I see for a gen2 track car is
the ability to stuff more rubber (easier) in the (rear) fenders compared to
the gen1.  If you are building a REAL serious track car, the gen2 extra
weight crap (like airbags, etc) are gonna get tossed anyway, so you could
keep the weight probably close to an 89.  I think the gen1's have a big
cooling advantage though, they get a lot more air to the rad.  IMHO you'd
need to ventilate a gen2 fascia to work well.

Front is 55 lb IIRC, and rear is 45.  Total 100 for the pair.  The inner
bumpers are approx 1/2 of that, the shocks probably 5 or 7 lbs a piece.  So,
you could just hang the OEM skin on custom brackets and cut the weight in
1/2.
