[Shotimes] Re Remanufactured Axles & Parts

There has been some discussion on the list whether it
is cost effective to replace a boot for $20 or just
buy a reman axle for $50.  Looking just at the numbers
the $50 deal seems a better buy but as usual you need
to look at all the facts before arriving at an
informed decision.  Inside the boot of an axle is a
series of grooves and balls.  When the grooves get
scored by dirt or lack of lubricant then the balls no
longer rotate smoothly and the audible clicking noise
can be heard.  Time for a new axle.  The axle
remanufacturer then has to remachine (grind) the
groove smooth and install oversize balls, a new boot
and viola a remanufactured axle.  Unfortunately the
process of remachining the groove smooth again also
removes the hardness in the metal and now the groove
wears quicker than before.  On top of that there are
only so many cores and no one knows for sure how many
times that one in the box you bought at AZ has been
remanufactured.  If the axle is clicking it needs
rebuilt period.  If you know the condition of your
core and you know it to be of good quality then get
yours rebuilt at an axle shop same price same fit no
problems.  It will take a little longer but you'll
have your part as new as can be expected.  If the axle
is not clicking and it is a low mileage good core
replace the boot. You'll get more mileage out of the
original core before it needs to be rebuilt
eventually. The same can be said for starters,
alternators,etc.  The cores out there are of dubious
quality some of them are on their second and third
reman.  Cores do not last forever and manufactures are
loath to pitch them out.  If your core is good get it
remanufactured locally.  Same price but it takes
longer.  Preserve your good core before you trade it
in on someone else's junk.  It's not the box, paint,
or guarantee, that makes the part it is the quality of
the core to begin with and the quality of the parts
used in the remanufacturing process.  You get what you
pay for.
