Except this seems to happen much sooner, and more often than a cam belt breaking. And one is a design choice, the other is a design flaw...

One can empathize with Gen III owners that are forced to deal with
this issue when they express themselves in this manner. I suppose
the surprise of it to people when they learn about it is the biggest
shock. From the sounds of this cam weld problem, it's probably no
worse than owning a car with an overlapping (interference between
pistons and valves) cam design when the timing belt snaps?
