What is the life span of a CID?Could it be shorted out and damaged by a
short circuit from another source. And what all does it do beside identify
what cylinder needs fuel??????TIA

The lifetime of the CMP may widely vary. I've had one last about 70K
miles and another one that went in about 10-20K miles.
I'm sure that it may be possible to have one shorted out due to some
wiring malfunction (ie. corroded wires and such) but I would put that down
at the bottom of a problem list unless you've had multiple problems with at
least 2 CMP's sensors going bad in a short period of time.
I don't believe that the CMP sensor has anything to do with providing
which cylinders need fuel. It does tell the computer what positions the
camshafts are in on startup, and it does work in conjuction with the CKP
(crankshaft position sensor) giving you your tach output
