I find it hard to believe that anyone would ever say the SHO was
overhyped. Sure there was excitement in the industry when Ford
introduced the car back in 1988 (3.0L 24V V6, 4 wheel disc brakes,
excellent performance). However, I can probably count on one hand
the number of TV commercials I saw for the SHO. Most people that
followed this car would say that Ford did not market this car well.
Add to that poor support at the dealerships and you have a recipe
for disaster.

Another premise in the article is that the idea of hotrodding a
Taurus is plain dumb. The sales numbers, while not stellar, were
significant. People that have practical family needs where a
Mustang or Corvette simply don't fit the bill can look to a four
door sports sedan to fill this need. Not all buyers of such a car
are inclined to buy a BMW or a Lexus. The Taurus SHO was big
enough, had enough refinements and had more than reasonable
performance in its day to make this a good choice for many.

A few critical design mistakes existed in the early year cars, and
the reputation of the car was damaged in places like Consumer
Reports.
Beyond these simple facts, the author of the article overlooked the
cult following that the car developed, nationwide and local clubs,
yearly conventions, and a strong internet community would say that
in the minds of many people the SHO is car that left an enduring
legacy with many past, present, and future owners.

Sincerely,
