I second the use of those Ketostix. I was eating to much protien and not
enough fats when I first started with Atkins. Never got into Ketosis. Got
the sticks, read the book and realized why I was gaining weight.

Well I got good news and I got bad news. I did Atkins for several months,
on two occasions.
Good news: You WILL lose weight without even trying, it's cool.
You get to eat bad things, use cream and butter when you
cook, LOTS OF MEAT!!!
You can tell lots of great atkin jokes.
Bad news; You WILL be hungry, sorry, people like to say you won't be,
but they're lying, you WILL be hungry.
For the first couple weeks, you're going to crave sweets and
carbs. Fight it, it's worth it.
Getting plugged up. Can't really put it any other way.
Once you're into the diet by a few weeks, make sure you get some greens
every day.
Now there is one thing you MUST do. Pick up some Keto test strips to make
SURE you're in Ketosis, the diet does NOT work unless you're in Ketosis.
They sell these at Low Carb stores, and you can find them online. If you
need a link, just ask, I can find them for you.
If you don't want to struggle with getting into Ketosis proper (which can be
pretty tough initially), spend the first two days starving. Don't consume
more than 200 calories in the entire day, and drink LOTS of water. I
guarantee that you'll be in ketosis full strength after that.
I dropped from 280 to 210 by being on Atkins for less than a year. Trust
me, it works, and if you're a pretty lazy person in general (like me) and
you start doing exercise too (like I did), then the weight will just fall
off. You'll see 5-10 lbs in the first 2 weeks usually.
Now I've been off it for about 3 weeks, and I've been enjoying myself
immensely because I get to eat all the things I couldn't before. I've only
gained like 7lbs doing it too. But I'm about to go back on Atkins so I can
get down below 200..........and then try to get back above it with weight
training. <G>
So good luck with the diet, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you
might have about it.

P.S.....Oh and if you have a PDA with Palm OS, the USDA has a really useful
free program that lists the nutritional information for thousands of food
items.
