The Pacer was also available with the 304 V8 in the Pacer X option package.
I never actually SAW one but I know that it was an option.  My wife LOVED
her Pacer, says it was one of the best cars she ever owned (after the SHO
that is) hers was the Pacer X with the Levi's interior.

Don't know about the Pacer, but the Gremlin was available with a 304 
V8, and people did put 383's in them -- a testimony to "you can't 
make a race car out of a pig, but you can make a really fast pig."
