It was designed to take one of the Wankel rotory engines that GM was going to produce in the mid-70's.  When that program was cancelled, AMC had to find other engines to use.  None of which had the packaging efficiency of the Wankels, and didn't fit the engine bay.  Another one of those "Good idea, bad execution" deals.
