Yep starters do go just like that. I one started out on a trip, drove
100 miles on the interstate, went into the rest area for a pit stop and
when I came out NO START! No warning, no clue. Fortunatly you can push
start an mtx. When I got home and pulled the starter the rebuild shop
found the brushes completely worn down. (iw was also pretty yucky &
dirty in therer friom brush dust and oil that dripped in from oil filter
changes). Cost of the rebuild was about $60.00 and it took all of an
hour while I waited. Not a bad R&R job either. Sometimes the bbrushes
develope a dead spot and the old hit it with a hammaer trick works by
either loosening the brush or jiggling the armature a little, but most
starters I have lost went without warniing and usualy at the most
inconvienent time.
FYI I understand it is hard & expensive to get a replacement unit. Ford
no longer makes them. Try to have yours rebuilt if possible. It is less
money and you know it will be the correct on when reinstalled.
