I'll second the Yokohama AVS ES100's. I have 5000 miles on
a set on my 96 SHO and so far they are great. Summer only,
but in heavy rain and on the track and street, about the
best compromise tire I have ever had.
What compromise?
I want decent ride. My '96 is my daily driver and Illinois
has some really bad roads. These ES 100's ride almost as
good as the Continental Sport Touring Contacts I took off
the car (and will go back on for winter) but have MUCH more
grip in wet and dry and especially at the track.
So far they are really quiet, but a LOT of people on the
Tire Rack site say they get noisy by 3000 miles. So at 5000
mine are still virtually silent. Getting them rotated today.
Also they were some of the best tires the tire store had
ever seen as far as initial balance. Needed almost zero weight!
and under $100 per tire at the Tire Rack.
The Conti Touring Contacts were a very good all season tire
that I had on the previous two convention tracks with good
results. Even pro drivers/instructors took my car out and
were happy with the tires, especially for a tire that would
handle snow/ice as well as these do. Usually I go for true
europeon winter tires but these Touring Contacts handled our
last two winters just fine. They are about $80 each I think
in most 16" sizes.
So there you have two pretty good cheap tires, one for year
round, one for summer only.
