> Once the bearings spins its usually bye bye motor.
When I worked in a garage I saw a lot of spun bearings.
By the time a bearing spins there is something wrong, maybe an oiling
problem. The bearing doesn't spin unless the friction between the bearing
and the crank increases enough to shear off the bearing locator tabs. In
the process of developing this friction the surface of the crank is affected
some, or maybe a lot. Now if you disassemble the engine at this time you
might be able to salvage it. OTOH the longer the engine is run like this
the more friction there is between the bearing, the crank, and the rod
journal and soon the crank and/or the rod will be toast. The average engine
with a spun bearing will require a new rod and a new crank.
My personal experience was with my 283 race motor. I caught it right as the
bearing started to spin. The inside of the rod journal looked OK, and I was
able to polish the crank journal with emery cloth so all I had to do was to
replace the bearings themselves.
