Actually, what drives a car CAN be called a "Motor". People
that like to sound smart and that have a background in
electricity say that a "motor" is something electric and an
"engine" is internal combustion.
I submit the following:
New Mirriam-Webster Dictionary: Motor: 1. One that imparts
motion. 2. a macine that produces motion or power for doing
work. 3. AUTOMOBILE.
Also:
Motorbike, Motorboat, Motorcade, Motorcycle, Motorhome,
Motorcar, Motorscooter, Motor vehicle.
BMW Mini commercials: "Let's Motor!"
Popular phrase for getting going in a car: "Motor-Motor"
Yes, it is also an engine, but I won't be taking off at the
track yelling: "engine-engine!"
Come on folks, you CAN call the device under the hood of any
car a "motor".
For sure you don't need to be cussing at and flaming people
for using the word motor for the SHO V6 or V8 "engine".
Kind of like people that get pissed when someone says they
"Warsh" their clothes instead of WASH. It's lingo, it's
regional, it's the American language being flexible.
Why don't we all get back to having fun with the car and not
worry about how some people use a word. In this case,
"motor" for the thing under the hood, is correct, be it
electric or internal combusion.
