[Shotimes] Its called an Engine

In my line of work I design PLC control systems for material handling
applications (conveyor belts and sorting systems). We do alot of work for
FedEx, UPS, DHL, USPostal, and many airport baggage handling systems. I do
alot of work with 480V induction MOTORS, 480V servo-driven MOTORS, and 480V
linear induction MOTORS (think magnetic-levitation trains, very quiet). I
have never, and will never refer to any of them as 480V ENGINES.
As for what's under the hood of my SHO - engine, motor, I've used both
terms.
BUT, consider this - when a diesel ENGINE, or a gasoline-powered ENGINE, or
a nartural gas-powered ENGINE is coupled to a generator and mounted on the
same skid, it's called a MOTOR-generator set. I've never referred to it, or
seen it referred to as an ENGINE-generator set.
While we're on the subject, a 747 has 4 jet ENGINES, and an F/A-18 Hornet
has 2 jet ENGINES with afterburners. I've never seen them referred to as
jet MOTORS. The military guys on the list may chime in and say, "We call it
a MOTOR when we're pulling one out of an airframe."
But, this is from the same people that call their gigantic aircraft
carrier - a BOAT. Yet Carnival Cruises and Disney call their behemoths -
cruise SHIPS. And, when a large floating vessel comes into port, it's a tug
BOAT not a tug SHIP that helps it manuever in tight spaces.
Motor, engine, ship, boat - ahhhh such is the American english lexicon.
