Yep, I do this a lot.  Just don't force it too hard if it doesn't 
want to go or you'll destroy your synchros.

I used to be fond of making my stang inch forward from a stop by 
pushing against first without using the clutch before I understood 
the inner workings of an MTX.

My SHO has 159k on the clock and still runs strong, although I may 
have to do the dreaded head gasket before long -- I discovered a good 
amount of oil sludge in the radiator the other day.

Just got done doing the HG on my wife's SOHC Neon and that was enough 
of a pain.  Now I get to do it on a car with 2 heads and 2 cams per 
head.  Ugh.
