James,
(see quote below) Then your Father served with my cousin.
He was a signalman, on the CV60, the "Fighting Cock" USS
Saratoga, one of the last of the non-nuclear aircraft
carriers. OK, now about 150 dirty minded people are
snickering, but the story is thus:
Saratoga II was a wind ship, Corvette class. During a fight
in the war of 1812, a British cannonball tore through the
deck of the Saratoga. It broke open a cage releasing a
seaman's rooster (or "gamecock as they were known). This
bird came up on deck and in the middle of the battle sat on
the rail and crowed and flapped at the British ship. This
so inspired the Americans that they won the day. The motto
"The Fighting Cock" became legend and has been the slogan of
every Saratoga since.
In my cousins honor I have joined the USS Saratoga
Association (honors ALL ships named Saratoga) and am working
(from a distance)to help them restore the CV60 as a museum
in Providence RI. The Saratoga is docked next to the also
decommissioned CV59, the Forrestal, in Newport RI. Part of
the museum is a Russian Cold War era submarine, Juliett 484,
a 300 foot long diesel sub that is now open to the public.
If you have US NAVY in your blood and are so inclined, visit
the web site and make a donation, or visit the location to
see these wonderful ships.

As for ship/boat, different branches have different
traditions, but if you dared call the Saratoga a "boat" near
a sailor stationed on her, you were in a world of hurt! :)
