Hi Bill..
That's exactly right. It's easy to do. There are two plugs in the conversion kit,
one for the speakers, and one for the power and ground. I've done it for all the
cars in my fleet. You have to solder the wires of the plugs to the wires of the
harness for the aftermarket unit. It's easy and foolproof, as long as you can read
and see color! ;-) All you need to get the kit is to give them the year of the
car. I don't know if Escorts ever came with premium sound...in a Taurus, premium
sound requires a slightly different speaker plug than a JBL system, and you need to
specify that option when you get the plug kit. My wagon has premium sound, and is a
bit harder to plug in and out, due to the different shape of the plugs. JBL is the
same as standard, which would be probably what you need. My '85 Escort used the
same plugs as JBL systems in Tauri.
Then just plug and play. The deck slides into a square metal sheath that goes into
the opening in the dash first, then you bend several tabs down so that it is held in
place. Then the deck slides in and locks. There are two little knifelike tools
that come with it so you can take it out when you want to...it's an easy way to keep
it from being swiped...just slide it out and unplug it when you are in a dangerous
part of town. It's not really designed to be removed at each shutdown, but you can
if you want, to get a little more peace of mind.
