Rich,
    I had very good luck using a PVC pipe coupler, and if I recall, it was
for 1.25" pipe, or a piece of 1.5" PVC would work as well.  However, I did
have a little bit of trouble, and I think the factory tool might be slightly
simpler if available.  There are some good instructions at
http://www.shophoenixproject.com for the change.
