The Talledega was like the Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird. It
had the body pieces for better aerodynamics, but the rest of the car had the
standard engine and drivetrain pieces. It was just to certify the body
configurations for the track.

IMHO, they were all ugly, but they accomplished their purpose in NASCAR.

There was an interesting show on Speed last weekend that I'm sure is a
rerun of an older series, but I just paid close attention for the first
time. I'm sure that old timers know this already. It was about the Ford
Torino Talladega, which was a car specifically built for running NASCAR
but that could be bought at Ford dealer. The story said about 500 were
sold in 1969. I don't know when the idea of homologation went by the
wayside, but the idea of being able to buy and race a factory built car
seems like a good idea.
