That fooled me too when my starter died six months ago.  Worked fine  the 
previous time I cranked it.  Not even a click the next time.   Fooled the hell 
out of me.  A new one was the answer.  
 
It seems sometimes when on the verge of being worn out, a starter can stop  
in a position where it won't spin the next time.  Some people have  suggested 
banging on the starter case with a rubber mallet or whatever will  reach.  If 
you have an MTX it's easy to "bump" the starter but with an ATX  you might try 
turning the crank bolt to make it rotate just a bit.  That  might get you to 
the parts store one last time.
 
This was my personal situation but as someone else pointed out, there are  
several other components that could also be the culprit.  Any of the  tests they 
suggested will help rule those in or out.
