The Pinto issue was a red herring, IMHO. It was a pretty good car, but
public opinion killed it....and this was pretty much after the model was at
the end of it's life.
FWIW, an early '70s 2.0 liter Pinto with a 4-speed was a fun car.

Yes, that is part of the point. What if the Pinto never had the
"exploding gas tank" issue. What if the SHO never had the clutch and
brake issue? When you come out of the gate, the car better be right or
the public won't soon forget.
