[Shotimes] A/C compressors

IM thinking of buying a used compressor. Is this a wise choice to make. i 
have been told by local shops it is better to jsut start over and not even 
try to use a used one.  so i was wondering if any would has. the guy that i 
am thinking about buy it from says it worked when pulled out of car. he also 
says he didnt use it much. how long do the compressors last. so i was just 
wondering if any one has had any luck doing this.
