[Shotimes] 1993 Taurus overheating problem

Where did you see white smoke, under the hood or out the tail pipe? Have you
replaced the temperature sensor? There are 3 of them. There is an one wire
one that feeds the temperature gauge on the dash, there is a 2 wire one that
feeds the PCM and there is the CELO sensor that stops the ETAC from running
the ventilation fan while the coolant is too cool.

What I would do is make sure the fans work 1st. To do that, open the hood,
start the motor and turn on the A/C. The fans should go on by the radiator.
If they don't that is your 1st problem. If they do, shut off the A/C and
just let the car idle until the coolant gauge hits approximately halfway up.
The fans should kick on. If they don't before you hit red, turn off the car!
If they do, all sensors are OK and you could have other issues such as a
clogged radiator or a weak water pump. How many miles? How often have you
had the coolant flushed? Has the water pump ever been changed?

Just my gut feeling, everything sounds fine. My '93 put out a LOT of heat!

Help!

I have seen other SHO owners describe the same problem I am having in
various web forums, but I haven't seen a solution yet.

My '93 Taurus just started overheating. The dashboard temp gauge never
enters the red danger zone, nor anywhere close, but the needle moves all
over the "normal" range, visibly moving back and forth as I
drive. Although the gauge never registers as too hot, the engine gets
much, much too hot -- after driving at normal city speeds for 15-20
minutes, the smell is noticeable and you can feel way too much heat coming
from the engine if you open the hood. Once, I even saw a small amount of
white smoke as I came to a stop in a parking lot.

My mechanic first told me he had located the problem and installed a new
thermostat. The new thermostat didn't change anything -- the problem is
exactly the same as before the thermostat was installed.

Has anyone had this problem, or can you offer any suggestions?

Thanks so much!!
Aaron
