I must chime in here....
I live in NY. 1hr north of Manhattan. For 17 years now. And I'm confused what some of you are referring to as a "NY accent".
There is NO single NY accent.
Assuming we're only talking about people who grew up in NY, I would say there are several accents but only a few are specific to NY such as the accents from Brooklyn, Manhattan and Bronx.
However, these NY specific accents are only spoken by a fraction of the whole population in NY state. In fact, even at the NY City level it's a very small fraction due to its large population of immigrants and people who have moved to the city from other parts of the country.
If you go outside the city and upstate NY, people speak no different than they do in CT, PA and NJ.
But regardless of any of this, it is TOTALLY unjustified to "put down" or "elevate" anyone based on their accent. There's a word for people who do this sort of thing, and I think we all know what that word is. And it's no different than putting down people based on their race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. IT'S JUST WRONG!
