[Shotimes] weird brake squeal *or* I don't know how to put
pads on

I hate when my pads switch sides. I want them on my side ALL the time!
Actually from the times I have done brakes it seems that the pads are
not side specific, at least when going in new. However it does sound
reasonable that they may have settled into a wear pattern which if
disturbed by reversal could cause some new vibration. I think most
likely the problem may be a lack of anti-rattle pads though. Didn't you
say the pads fell out when you pulled the calipers? If so, when you
reinstalled did you put in any anti-rattle pads or anti-squeel compound?
The new pads I have used have always come with pads that go on the back
of the pad to keep them from squeeling due to vibration. Are there any
missing anti-rattle clips? I don't remember from my last brake job if
the fronts have them, I know the rears have little springs on the top
for this purpose.
Check the pads. If the backs of the padsa are bare metal, try using some
disk brake quiet compound from the parts store. Good luck. Hope you're
someplace warm. It's 20 below here tonight.
