I smell something fishy.  Usually, when you end an auction early, you have
to pay Ebay based on the highest bid at the time the auction was ended.
Sounds like he was looking to get out of Ebay fees.  It's just as easy to
end the auction as it is to edit the price.

At least he's a friendly seller. :)
