Paul,
Make sure that you only replace that key with an aluminum one. A steel key
will shear off again, very quickly, and may damage the crankshaft in the
process. An aluminum key is standard issue for a Briggs engine as well as
most other mower engines.
My grandfather bought a 30" Snapper in 1970, which he used for many years.
He gave it to me in 1981. I still use it every weekend throughout the warm
months. With regular maintenance, I hope to keep using it for another 20-30
years. Replaced the engine and mower deck once and a few blades. All other
parts are still original, even the tires.

No quite. This only damaged the key and not the keyway. But identical
symptoms and that is the SHO tie -in. :)

Is that similar to crank cancer on the GEN I,II?

Been tinkering with my turd of a turtle Snapper snowblower for the
last week. Seems it would take a richer and richer mixture last year to
keep it running. This year I started it and it ran the same. Took the carb
off and cleaned it all out and I could not get it restarted. Of course I
figured I fubared the carb somehow.
Any way I proceeded to take all apart, good compression, wet plug,
good spark but no start.
Turns out the flywheel key sheared off. It's not only the SHOs that
give me fits.....
