Actually, it shouldn't of revved to 5,000 in neutral. The rev limiter should
of kept it at 3,000 or less.

Yeah, the ATX's don't like being dropped into gear from 4k rpms.

The transmission is probably so damaged that it would not be worth fixing.
The better option may be to have a rebuilt tranny installed.  Yes, that bill
would probably approach $2k.

Only you (or your son) can determine if it's worth fixing.  If he likes the
car and it's been maintained properly there's no reason it shouldn't live a
long, long time.  If he doesn't spend the $2k to get it fixed, what's he
going to do?  Buy another car, right?  And what would that cost him?  I'm
not trying to tell anyone what to do, because the answer to this dillemma is
different for each person.

As far as a supplier, there's a few options.  If he wants the cheapest out,
he can get a used ATX (not rebuilt) from somebody and pay the $400-500 to
have it installed, and pray that it lasts for awhile.  Risky, yes.  He could
take his chances with a local transmission shop.  If he goes this route tell
him to make sure there's a warranty on the tranny.  Most places will sell a
2- or 3-year warranty, assuming you get the fluid changed on schedule.  He
could go through a local Ford dealer, although they're far from transmission
specialists and you never know what you're going to get.  He could get a
Jasper transmission (www.jasperengines.com) and have it installed by a
Jasper preferred installer.  I statewide search on Jasper's site shows
hundreds of them.  Note that all Jasper trannies have 3yr/75k mile
warranties.

So many options, so little money ;^)

He has a '93 ATX with about 150,00 on the odo. On the way home from work
tonight ( bloody cold in NJ, ice and snow I think ) the throttle seemed to
stick open. He stopped at a light, with some difficulty, and knocked the
transmission into neutral, whereupon the engine raced to somewhere around
5,000 RPM. Being the bright spark that he is ( Ph. D in Mathematics, no
common sense ), he proceeded to engage drive when the light changed,
resulting in strange noises from the transmission as he blew it apart, and,
of course, no drive to the wheels.

So, now he has a 150,000 mile car with, apparently, no transmission.

Can anyone recommend a supplier in the NJ area who could swap out the box at
a reasonable cost? He just started his first job this week, so he is,
essentially, broke, at least until he pays off the college debts. I am
guessing he might be looking at a $2,000 bill? Is it even worth fixing?
