You're correct.  There's a clause that covers rentals but does not cover a
loaner or demo.

That sounds very plausible in your situation. Let's say that you didn't own
a car, and had no car insurance? Maybe they wouldn't have let you drive the
demo, but good luck in coming after you if something happens!!

Not "absolutely" true on your car insurance policy, though, as there are
clauses in most auto policies that cover you if you are driving a rental car
(not to be confused with a demo).
