Robert,

My Interstate dealer confirmed the problems with the red top 
batteries, but mainly with cars in storage a lot.

He also said that Optima was not honoring their warranty 
without a lot of hastle on his part.  He honored the 
warranty on my early model Optima, but said that the 
replacement had a much shorter replacement period, and 
pro-rated.

I now have my Optima on a Battery Tender Jr. so it never 
drops below 12v and I expect it to last a long time.

I think the key to these and almost any battery, is to keep 
it charged.  Since I have a few vehicles (old SHO's, 
tractors etc) that sit most of the time, I have now invested 
in several of the battery tenders.
