9mm and .38 special are basically the same diameter (.38 special is now
somewhat of a misnomer but has a basis in history). 9mm will typically use
.355 dia. bullets while .38 special will use .357 dia. bullets. 9mm and .38
special are typicall subsonic so there is not so much noise as the
projectiles pass by. The 30mm has a velocity that is about 3 to 4 times the
velocity of the handgun cartridges, well into the supersonic range, so there
is a lot more noise as the projectiles pass by, not only from the velocity
but also from the much larger diameter. Also you can bet that they heard
the noise of the cannon firing, but they might not have known which
direction it was firing at. Because the rounds are supersonic, the first
target would not have heard the muzzle report before the projectiles
arrived, but the other targets would have heard it.
